Facts about TIFF

The Toronto film festival went through many different changes such as its name, pricing, and many others. While doing some research about Tiff to better understand what it is and what it does/did I found some interesting facts about TIFF that are surprising, at least they are to me.

TIFF was first called “Festival of Festivals” because it was meant to show the best films from other festivals around the world, however, the name changed to TIFF in 1994. Also in 1976 admission costed 2 dollars unlike today where it costs 20 dollars or around 1000 dollars for a package. This is interesting to know that TIFF changed that much because it makes me question why the pricing changed so much, and whether it is high so that they can get some benefit. Another interesting fact is that until 2015 Tiff had no jury and was non-competitive in order to make it a relaxed and a fun nature festival. There was always one award given at TIFF though, which was the People’s Choice Award.

In 2007, TIFF contributed $67 million to Toronto’s economy, and by 2013, the boost had grown to 189 million dollars.

Tiff did not only provide a relaxed and fun natured environment, but also heled the economy tremendously.
