Day 2: Trapped in Toronto

Dear Reader,

It is my second day inside the city. It’s raining, my butt is wet, and I’ve slept nine times more than anyone else in the group.

Today was not so bad. I spent the majority of it napping. After experiencing my first bit of bad luck with a ‘Rush’ line, I grabbed a calzone. One of the best calzones I’ve ever had in my life. Lawson hardly even finished his, typical Lawson. My intention and goal for the day was to get some homework accomplished, as I am typing this, my goal is still not fulfilled. Instead I fell asleep after Victor the handyman made some repairs to our shower, which I’m still not convinced it was broken.

I woke up just in time to throw a jacket on and hit up an Industry Happy Hour. I will be the first to tell you that I was excited for the opportunity to mingle with some folks that are involved and in love with the same industry as myself. However, being who I am, I don’t have the chops to spark a conversation. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of an ice breaker, knowing my own strengths and interests, or a general fear of the public, but again, my goals for the event were unfulfilled. But as with all good stories (exception to the rule), dear reader, this one has a rather happy ending. Although I was not able to accomplish mingling with strangers in a lobby as I sipped a water, I did make a few new friends from the group, other social-less guys and gals from the Oakland party.

The group ended up finding food and sticking together for the majority of the rest of the night. There was a point in time when I was riding Mendola’s shoulders trying to sign autographs as ‘The Tallest Man at the Festival.’ I returned the favor to him just in time to spot some celebrities, I think.

Some point today, I announced to the group that Michael Arnold is my spirit animal. This was confirmed throughout the day as Arnold and I spent a lot of time killing each other with girlish giggles as the rest of the group contained their hatred for the two of us. He might be the cutest of the triplets. (Don’t tell him I said that.)

Lawson, John, and Myself spent some time together grabbing lunch, talking music, and callously stuffing our faces with cheese, sauce, and dough which we would later refer to us grief eating the pity pizza. Take that Julianne Moore.

Not to leave anybody out, Tayler (girl Tayler) came up to me and announced that she retracted her spirit animal and instead declared ME as her spirit animal, in which I made a witty retort. (Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. You weren’t there, you can’t prove anything.)

Maddie and I shared a soft serve ice cream experience. I would rate it 8 stars.

Nick Miller, not only my doppleganger from New Girl, also a classmate, one of the triplets, and a fellow Dungeon Master.

Last but certainly not least, Kelsey and I got to talk about our love for our dear Professor Shaerf. (I promise I love him more.) She revealed to me the growth of their relationship and instilled a jealous moment that I still can’t shake. But on top of that, she shared her umbrella with me and watched as I galloped into the distance and made record time back to the hostel. (Again, you weren’t there, you can’t prove anything.)

All in all, today was full of connections, typos, and commas. Eventually we made it to the first ever Prime Time screening from a suggestion Mikey made, ‘Trapped.’ I’d like to tell you that I enjoyed it. I’d like to tell you that I am excited to watch the other 9 episodes on a streaming service in the future. I’d like to tell you these things but unfortunately my body controls me and my eyes weren’t able to stay awake. I maybe lasted ten minutes. In those ten minutes I still made critiques about the show. First of all, the disconnect between the opener and the rest of the show lent itself to asking questions. Questions, lots of them. Establishing relationships was slow and reminiscent of ‘The Wire‘. Lots of quick introductions that I felt, honestly, could have been established quicker. Despite some of the negatives, the crowd was pleased with the pilot episode of Trapped. Questions were being fired from the audience left and right. The director, Baltasar Kormakur, is amazingly excited about his debut as a TV director. (One of four on the show.) His excitement and passion for his project made me feel so much worse about falling asleep during the screening. I thought it was interesting the way he talked about not having an idea for a second season but sees definite possibilities outlined within the parameters that the show promises; to be trapped and to create content only Iceland can promise.

On the walk home Arnold, Maddie, and myself performed a lovely rendition of the Van Morrison classic ‘Moondance‘ within ear shot of Nick. Once we finished he told me my voice sounded like the singer from The Antlers. I don’t know what that means but eventually I will spend some time and check out whether it’s a compliment or an insult.

Dear reader, it’s just after one in the morning here in Toronto and tonight I’ve decided to be an outside blogger. The rain is washing me away and I still have so much homework to make sure I get done.

Until next time, adieu.
